Every opinion shall be written in both English and Japanese and sent to the address shown below with a target subject clearly specified using an e-mail. [Apr. 2, 2002, Secretary, Masahiro NISHIBORI] ----------------------------[SQAMT News]----------------------------- NetBBS : Disposal guidelines of waste of molecule tests [1] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We have no official guideline about how to dispose of waste of molecule tests presently and each institute adopts its own process for it. But public anxiety about this problem is getting so large that we should not leave it as is. At my institute, all wastes of nucleic-acid amplification testing are sealed up and then incinerated by some infectious waste disposal firm. But about gels and liquid waste contaminated by ethidium bromide, each section takes their own process. My section uses hypochlorous acid and others use activated charcoal, pass them directly to some professional company, etc. The Molecular Cloning 1.50 Notes of Maniatis advises not to use hypochlorous acid and recommends heating at 262 degrees Celsius, Amberlite XAD-16 or activated charcoal. About this problem, there will be various subject to be discussed such as concrete processes of each institute, relevant evidence and requirements for a guideline, therefore I would like to have active discussions among the members.
