Therefore the Society decided to issue the SQAMT News monthly from this year. Each issue will be edited by 12 experienced members in turn. Many organizations has cope with the issue of standardization, but the situation is not so improved and the audience usually has little chance to know what a committee in charge of those issues is doing. I expect this e-mail monthly magazine encourages to spread and to promote molecular diagnostic tests properly in the medical practice. Classification and standardization of molecular diagnostic tests were discussed. 2) Japan Society for Clinical Laboratory Automation : During the 34th conference, a technical seminar on molecular diagnostic tests were held on Sep. 11, 2002. The technical committee was held on the same day and decided to apply for a grant, to conduct a multi-institutional external quality control and to revise a technical guideline of gene analysis. 3) Japan Bioindustry Association : The final report of a project dedicated to standardization of evaluation procedures for molecular diagnostic tests was issued aiming at creating a proper ISO standard in future. [Dec. 16, 2002, Tadao FUNATO (Tohoku University)] ----------------------------[SQAMT News]----------------------------- Opinion: Pursuing new tests which fulfill our demand ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ At present, only few molecular diagnostic tests for infectious disease are commercially available and their results are not always consistent. Recently, there has been a strong rush to develop equipment and reagents aimd at the post-genome market and it is not easy for us to find the right DNA tips or a required knowledge of SNPs. Only one commercial magazine provides useful information about them. Therefore, we should put related information in order and provide it the audience. That kind of information will be play the same role as some computer magazines which you consult to buy a personal computer. We not only should evaluate present tests, but also should find new tests that meet clinical requirements. Easy manipulation and stable results are important for widespread use of the tests, but neither of them has been realized so well yet. To make a breakthrough, I believe that we can develop much easier and much more sensitive tests making the best use of DNA tips and proteosome technologies.
