For ensuring its steady growth, annual review of its Policy by the Membership is considered to be very important. I belive that clinical laboratory physicians should be responsible for promoting molecular diagnostic testing and for quality assurance of it. And also, this activities will help good publicity for us and elevation of our name values. It was a good news that a demand for establishing a sectional committee in Japanese Society of Laboratory Medicine based on our activities was emerged at its Annual Meeting held at Hiroshima last year. I expect the activities to accelerate identification of diverse problems in molecular diagnostic testing and solution of them. I would like to pick up several subjects for promotion of exchanging informative news and for organizing research collaboration using the electronic journal. Please discuss the following proposal of the policy for 2004. 1. Development of innovative methodologies and etiological approaches How to properly introduce cDNA micro-array techniques and SNPs into clinical laboratory practice to vitalize it. How to provide technological information, seek and propose research collaboration, discuss standardization and quality assurance and watch the new movements. 2. Preparation for standardization Identification of subjects requiring solution, activities of relating organizations, how to introduce molecular tests into laboratory practice, how to get approval of an institutional review board, how to establish a principle of gene therapy. 3. Evidence Based Genetic Testing (EBGT) Application of EBM to molecular diagnostic testing was proposed by the Japanese Society for Gene Diagnosis and Therapy. A proper diagnostic value of gene diagnosis should be clearly identified in the STARD (the Standards for Reporting of Diagnostic Accuracy) initiative. There may be some overlaps among these subjects and we had better pick up a few of them. I would like to collect and distribute related information using this electronic newspaper. I expect its editorial board to send news and updates on those subject to the Secretary using an e-mail anytime whenever they are obtained. I hope this activity will help the Society become larger and someday we will be able to have annual conferences of our own.
